Development of a New Regulatory Approach to the Management of Incidental Take of Migratory Birds in Canada
The Canadian Wildlife Service is currently involved in scoping the development a new regulatory framework that will provide for long-term conservation of migratory birds. Environment Canada recognizes that broad-scale landscape conservation and population management measures are essential to achieving stable and robust populations of migratory birds. Recent amendments to the Migratory Bird Convention Act, 1994 reflect the emphasis on sustainable populations of migratory birds. Those amendments provide the legal authority to support an exemption or permit framework that would allow for a limited amount of incidental take of migratory birds. Achieving this goal is a Canadian priority and Environment Canada is going to look at implementation scenarios for this approach. Any opinions, proposals or suggestions on the development of a new approach can be shared by writing to the Director General, Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada, Ottawa, ON, K1A 0H3.
